Dealing effectively with the germs of your website
by Zepht on Mar.12, 2010, under Contact us
Sometimes, when you monitor your website or youtube account, or any other places where you can get comments, there may be germs when you check the comments.
By germs, i mean unwanted comments. So far, i’ve encountered 2 types of germs in my stint as a website creator. The 1st type is spammers. The 2nd type is bad comments. Here’s how i deal with them.
First of all, moderate comments. As of all us know, free comments leads to verbal wars, which we have seen enough on Youtube. Some irrelevant comments, can lead to rage and flame war and it just goes on and on for days.
Let’s start with the spammers. I classify them into 2 types. Your typical Type A spammers throws a junk of text into your website, and leaving a URL for people to click. The content may either be very irrelevant text, or a lump of bad language. These type of rude spammers want traffic, so they throw their trash on every website they can find, relevant or not. Assess the content quickly, and if it looks like spam, mark it as spam. I clear all garbage every week.
Type B spammers, the better ones, also want traffic. Usually they have a decent website/blog and they are trying to sell something. Yet, they do not put irrelevant content. Some compliment on your posts, and leave a URL that states their purpose. For example, you may get a comment that says “Hey, i like your posts”, and the “name” of the sender might be “successful living”, followed by a URL. I dont mind this type of spam, and usually approve them. If they are good websites, ask for a trackback, so traffic exchange is created. Life’s too short to be sending people a thousand miles away from your castle.
The second type of germs is what i hate to get. Bad, rude, negative comments. When someone with a elitist-complex disagrees with what you write, you might get a rude comment from him/her saying how wrong you are. Delete this type of comment immediately. Or treat it like spam. Opinions are only valueable when kindly and efficiently put across. If the source of bad comments keep coming back, delete it everytime. If persistant, send the person a personal email saying you won’t entertain such comments. Say you may approve them when the tone is better.
